Heroes, Lovers, and Others tells the fascinating history of Latinos in film, from the birth of the movies to the present, through a series of stories about Hollywood's most famous and enduring stars. The book features such Latino legends as Dolores del Rio, Rita Hayworth, Ramon Navarro, Desi Arnaz, Anthony Quinn, Raquel Welch, Selma Hayek, and Antonio Banderas. But this is much more than a just collection of celebrity stories. Clara E. Rodriguez shows how the careers of these stars were shaped by the temper of the times in which they lived and how they managed their own sense of personal and screen identities. The sparkling parade of Latino film stars presented against the backdrop of American social and cultural history changes the way we think of race and ethnicity in Hollywood and challenges us to reexamine conventional ways of viewing our past. Not least of all, Heroes, Lovers, and Others will inspire readers to watch old and new movies with a sharpened sense of the personal, artistic, and social dynamics underlying their history and, by telling the stories of several long-forgotten stars, make readers wish these stories themselves would be made into movies.

For a young and commercially successful artist, Norah Jones has admirably avoided playing it too safe. After scoring an unlikely sales sensation and multiple Grammy award winner with 2002's torchy Come Away With Me, Jones shifted gears slightly to accent that album's country and folk elements on the 1970s-styled follow-up, Feels Like Home. Following that, Jones deliberately played with expectations, first becoming a low-key sideman in a quirky alt-country band called the Little Willies, then playing the lead role in a new movie by Hong Kong arthouse director Wong Kar-Wai. Jones's third album, Not Too Late, is perhaps not as extreme as any of those other moves away from her initial comfort zone, but it's a departure nonetheless. Recorded by Jones and longtime collaborator Lee Alexander in their home studio and featuring only self-penned material, Not Too Late is far less polished than Jones's previous records, with many songs featuring little more than the singer's familiar croon, a Floyd Cramer-influenced piano, and Alexander's subtle bass. Not quite jazz, country, or pop, Not Too Late fuses all of Jones's influences into an immediately identifiable whole. It's easily her most mature and personal album to date. Deluxe DVD content includes: 1. Thinking About You (Music Video) 2. Until The End (Music Video) 3. Sinkin' Soon (Music Video) 4. Interview with Norah 5. Thinking About You (behind the scenes at the video shoot) 6. Sinkin' Soon (behind the scenes at the video shoot) 7. Two live bonus tracks from Rehearsals.com filmed in Burbank, CA, in November 2006.

A quartet of films hosted by Shaft himself, Richard Roundtree! From the birth of cinema, Hollywood produced over 500 race films exclusively for all-black theaters with all-black casts. Comics, cowboys and gangsters all found an easy home in these segregated cinemas, and new movie stars were born. Now you can take a close look at four unsung gems of black cinema: The Devil's Daughter (a tale of island voodoo), Gang War (warring mobsters battle for Harlem's Jukebox racket), Herb Jeffries in The Bronze Buckaroo (an all-black-cast singing cowboy Western), and finally, Mantan Moreland in a beautiful copy of Monogram's Up in the Air, a murder comedy staged at a radio station in the 1940s.

Cats are not meant to save the world. Fitz the cat is supposed to be enjoying the normal activities savored by those of the feline persuasion--napping (a lot), nibbling on house plants, sharpening his claws on expensive furniture, and, most importantly, never, ever doing what a human wants him to. But instead, thanks to Zeke, Stephanie, and Hector--those meddling, tuna-hatin'', whiskerless kids who dragged him down to Underwhere--Fitz has bigger fish to fry (though, of course, he prefers his fish raw). Not only has he started thinking like a human, he''s actually helping them recover the stolen Scepter of Underwhere, battle a wild pack of triceradoodles, outwit a roaming band of savage mice, and foil the plans of the strange new movie director in town, who happens to smell awfully familiar. . . .
